Long Boi statue damage

We’re aware of some damage to our beloved Long Boi statue. His welfare, and the safety of those visiting him, is paramount so he’s been removed as we assess the damage and we’ll be doing all we can to restore him to full glory as soon as possible.

1. Working towards our sustainability goals

Sustainability remains central to the University’s vision and a core focus for us. Take a look at this year’s Sustainability Annual Report for initiatives we’ve undertaken in the last 12 months and our progress toward our sustainability goals.

You can also get involved by reading our Sustainability at York newsletter and signing up for carbon literacy training to gain a free qualification and become a carbon literate citizen. Learn more about climate change, the science, its impacts and the action we can all take to reduce it.

2. Could you be drinking too much?

Sometimes it’s good to take a step back and look at the impact that alcohol has on you, your studies and your life in general. Check out your relationship with alcohol with the DrinkAware free online Drinking Check to receive personalised results and guidance and discover more about your drinking. Want to cut down? Find out how to start thinking about your drinking.

3. Come to the Movember moustache bench

We’ll be welcoming the Movember team to campus this Friday (22 November) and they’ll be bringing their ’problem shared’ moustache bench to encourage conversations about men’s health. The Movember bench needs two people to balance - because ‘a problem shared is a problem halved.’ Look out for more details on our social media later this week.

4. Reduce the amount of time you spend reading

Learn to read academic texts more effectively in the forthcoming Academic Reading: what it is and how to do it online session on 26 November. Learn how to read actively, critically, and purposefully, and find out strategies on how to reduce the time you spend reading. You can also check out our online managing your reading guide.

5. Cyclists: light up, be seen, stay safe

As evenings grow darker, visibility on the roads is crucial for everyone’s safety. In order to avoid a fine, you must have bike lights on when cycling in the dark. The Travel and Transport team are giving away free bike safety gear on Thursday (21 November) as part of their ’Light Up, Be Seen, Be Safe’ campaign, including high visibility vests, bike lights and slap wrap arm reflectors.
