Message from the Dean

In recent weeks the UK Government has published a White Paper on education with a strong focus on higher education policy. Somewhat unusually (and very happily) postgraduate research gets more than a passing mention. As well as confirming the improvements to the terms and conditions of studentships for those of you funded by UKRI, there was a commitment to support the UK’s research pipeline through postgraduate research.

The document promised to extend, for the first time, the reach of the Office for Students to cover postgraduate provision and to explore the financial barriers in particular which can affect postgraduate research.

Here at the University of York and in YGRS we are already engaged in relevant initiatives, especially through the Generation Research project, and through the Yorkshire Consortium for Equity in Doctoral Education (YCEDE). As the YCEDE project draws to an end, a final showcase event held in York highlighted what progress has been made, but also the many challenges remaining. As ever, it was very illuminating to hear from our own postgraduate researchers at the event about what YCEDE has given them, and what they have given to YCEDE.

You may have seen that the University has recently published a ‘community declaration’: Together York. For me, this very much captures the spirit of the postgraduate research community at York: a community of scholarship; of respect; and of purpose. Just one example of that is Language & Linguistic Science PhD student Awais Hussain who has been shortlisted in the arts and creative industries category at the forthcoming Yorkshire Asian Young Achievers Awards (the ‘YAYAs’). Congratulations to Awais - read more about this below.

Finally from me, a big thank you to all of you who came along to the most recent meetings of the PGR Forum. The Forum is run jointly by YGRS and York SU and is your opportunity to discuss PGR issues with us and each other. Look out for announcements about the next meeting in 2026.

Best wishes,
Paul
