We’re looking forward to welcoming you - or welcoming you back - to York! During the semester, we send you a short student news summary of key things happening each week across the University.

Continuing students should already have your Semester 1 timetable, while new students will get your timetable on Wednesday (16 September). You can import your timetable into Google Calendar or bring everything together by downloading the MyUoY app.

All students must complete the Respect at York training on ‘Understanding consent and being an active bystander’ on the VLE before the start of semester. Respect at York underpins everything that we do. Our Together York community declaration outlines how we behave towards one another at the University. This encompasses a code of conduct on Free Speech and a Personal Relationship Policy. You can also find out more about how we are tackling harassment and sexual misconduct. 

We’re investing in a number of improvements to campus safety, including general access to campus buildings. As a result, from Monday 21 September, you will need to wear your student Unicard around campus. If you need one, grab a lanyard from Campus Receptions at the Information Centre and Ron Cooke Hub.

Students living on Campus West now collect mail and parcels from the new Student Mailroom next to Dalham Farm. When ordering items, use your full college accommodation address and known-as name, rather than an alias or nickname. You’ll receive a barcode to collect your items from the mailroom. Campus East students are unaffected and still collect from the Piazza Mailroom.

Whether you’re new or returning to York, there are some things that everyone needs to do at the start of semester.

New international students will need to attend a student visa registration event. Don’t forget, you can also navigate the checklists on the MyUoY app.

In addition to your college-specific welcome events, the University of York Students' Union is hosting a huge welcome calendar for all students - both new and returning. 

All students are welcome at the Welcome Fair on Saturday 26 September to get your year off to a great start! Find out about societies, sports clubs, media groups and volunteering projects to get involved with and pick up loads of freebies on the way. Head to the York SU website to browse the timetable of welcome events. 

Don't forget to come to your official welcome event to the University on either Monday 21 or Tuesday 22 September, hosted by York SU and your college committee.

You may be feeling a little nervous about starting at York. That’s normal and you might be surprised by how many other students feel the same. We’ve asked our current students to share their experiences and top tips for Welcome week. And remember our Wellbeing Officers are available for a friendly chat.

The start of a new academic year brings lots of excitement but it’s sensible to think about looking after yourself. Whether you’re a new or returning student, York’s rivers are dangerous and you should stay away from the water, especially on a night out. Watch your drink and never spike anyone else’s with more alcohol than they’re expecting. By following our tips for a safe night out, everyone can have a great first week at York!

You never think it will happen to you but we often hear of scammers targeting students at this time of year. Protect yourself by taking a few moments to find out about regular scams we know of - like the Student Loans Company phishing scam and the fake HMRC tax refunds scam. International students should also be aware of the fake visa or police scam. Learn our seven tell-tale signs of a scam.

Your username and password are vital pieces of your University identity - never share your password. If someone does know it, you need to change your password straight away.
