UoY community update

NEW: Campus West student mailroom weekend opening

For a trial period, Dalham Farm Student Mailroom on Campus West is now open on Saturdays and Sundays between 11am to 4pm. Once you’ve been notified via email, you’ll now be able to collect your post on Campus West at the weekend.

Be a good neighbour

We all have a responsibility to the community we live in, and being a good neighbour is one of them. To best support our local neighbours, we ask our community to:

  • Keep noise levels down, especially late at night.
  • Park sensibly and legally (if you use a car), without blocking access for others.
  • Be aware of fast moving vehicles around campus, especially during rush hour.
  • Avoid using the Heslington church car park as a shortcut to campus, particularly during peak school drop-off times.

Thank you for helping us to maintain our community of respect - both on campus, and off.

Don’t forget: Careers Fairs this week

Stop by the STEM learning centre this week for our upcoming Law Fair (21 October) and Graduate Jobs and Placements Fair (22 October). Meet employers, explore our free workwear wardrobe, review your CV with a Careers team member and even take a professional headshot for Linkedin! Our new Careers Fair First Steps guide helps you to prepare and know what to say when you meet employers.

1. Protect yourself from new Cyber Scams

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month - a chance to understand more about online threats and how to protect yourself.

Following a recent increase in the number of cyber security threats targeting both staff and students across our University community, our IT team has produced updated guidance to help you identify the most recent phishing attempts, and keep your personal data secure.

Not sure where to start? We’ve also broken down simple steps you can take today to stay safe online.

2. Make connections in York

Student Connect is a simple way to connect with new friends, future housemates and other students at York who share your interests. Complete the Student Connect Form and you will be connected with 1-5 other students in a group, based on your interests, level of study and age group. You’ll also have the chance to meet your connections on campus and take part in some fun activities. Sign up for Student Connect by Monday 2 November.

3. Improve your digital skillset

Making content and exploring digital tools at the moment? Why not try some upcoming training sessions:

  • Google Vids: video editing with AI tools (Tuesday 27 October, 1pm - 2:30pm)
  • How do you engage with generative AI ethics? (Wednesday 28th October, 3:30pm - 5pm)
  • 10 tips for better surveys (Thursday 29 October, 1pm - 2pm)

4. Shape the future of student experiences

Want to help make the University more inclusive? Apply to join the Student Expert Panel and share your perspective on University decisions, services and projects. The Panel works with staff to make sure student experiences help shape what happens next. Apply by Sunday 1 November, and email student-expert-panel@york.ac.uk with any questions you may have.

5. Community events on and off-campus

Join the Postgraduate and International Communities team for their upcoming International Movie and Board Game Night (22 October)! All are welcome to attend - grab some popcorn and settle in for a cosy evening! The Visiting Student team will be on hand for the first part of the event to chat and answer any questions.

Missed out on tickets to the upcoming Whitby trip (23 October)? Register your interest to be the first to hear if any additional tickets are released.

Your voice

If you’re feeling homesick, finding ways to keep busy and create new routines can be a great way to make York feel more like home. Student Anaïs shares her favourite student societies she’s experienced so far, and with over 200 others to choose from, you’re sure to discover something you’ll love.
