Your postgraduate student news summary of key things happening this week.

Things to know this week

We’re looking forward to welcoming you to York! During the semester, we send you a short student news summary of key things happening each week across the University.

UoY community update

Your timetable

New students get their timetable on Wednesday (10 September). You can import your timetable into Google Calendar or bring everything together by downloading the MyUoY app.

Reminder: complete our Respect at York module

All students must complete the new Respect at York training on ‘Understanding consent and being an active bystander’ on the VLE before the start of semester. This module supports everyone to better understand what sexual consent is and how to have healthy, consensual relationships.

Respect at York underpins everything that we do. Our Together York community declaration outlines how we behave towards one another at the University. This encompasses a new code of conduct on Free Speech and an updated Personal Relationship Policy. You can also find out more about how we are tackling harassment and sexual misconduct.

Effective communities are built on shared values and we invite all members of our community to join together in upholding them.

Summer campus makeover

We’ve seen a few updates to campus over the summer to improve your experience here at York! When you arrive, be sure to check out the newly refurbished Library Cafe, as well as a renovated Market Square Store and York SU venues at Kitchen and Courtyard.

1. What to do when you arrive

There are some things that everyone needs to do at the start of semester, including checking your contact details are up to date on e:Vision. See our postgraduate checklist and international student checklist. New international students will need to attend a student visa registration event.

Don’t forget, you can also navigate the checklists on the MyUoY app.

2. Connecting on campus

The University of York Students' Union is hosting a huge welcome calendar for all students. Head to the York SU website to browse the full timetable of welcome events. There are loads of postgraduate-specific welcome events this week, starting with the pizza party tonight!

Don’t forget to come to your official postgraduate welcome event to the University, with a wine and cheese reception hosted by Wentworth College and the Vice-Chancellor on Thursday (11 September). See all Wentworth College welcome events.

3. Keeping safe during your studies

York is regularly rated as one of the safest places to live in the UK but you can get 24/7 access to our Campus Safety team via our SafeZone app. With features such as emergency calling and a geo-location alert - as well as a general helpdesk for non-emergency queries - get quick and immediate help by downloading SafeZone now.

4. It won’t happen to you.. right?

You never think it will happen to you but we often hear of scammers targeting students at this time of year. Protect yourself by taking a few moments to find out about regular scams we know of - like the Student Loans Company phishing scam and the fake HMRC tax refunds scam. International students should also be aware of the fake visa or police scam. Learn our seven tell-tale signs of a scam.

Your username and password are vital pieces of your University identity - never share your password. If someone does know it, you need to change your password straight away.

5. Develop your language skills

Want to learn a language alongside your studies? We offer evening language classes through our Languages for All programme. Choose from a range of languages at multiple proficiency levels - UoY students enjoy a discounted price. Register by Sunday 28 September 2025.
