UoY community update

Meningitis: know the symptoms

It’s important we remain alert to prevent the spread of infectious illnesses:

  • Check your vaccinations are up to date - contact your doctor if you’re unsure
  • Know the symptoms of infectious illnesses
  • Act quickly if symptoms appear by phoning 999
A graphic from Meningitis Now, featuring cartoon faces describing signs and symptoms for Meningitis and Septicaemia. Text reads: 'Symptoms can appear in any order. Some may not appear at all. 1. Fever, cold hands and feet. 2. Vomiting. 3. Drowsy, difficult to wake. 4. Confusion and irratibility. 5. Severe muscle pain. 6. Pale, blotchy skin, spots / rash. 7. Severe headache. 8. Stiff neck. 9. Dislike bright lights. 10. Convulsions / seizures.'

Remember, if you feel unwell make sure you let someone know and, if a friend is unwell, check on them regularly.

Great York Walk 2026: Over £25,000 raised for Mental Health Research

On Saturday, 16 May over 180 walkers came together to take part in the sixth year of the Great York Walk - a community fundraising event to support a Mentally Fit York. A huge thank you to all who took part from our UoY community, and kindly donated their time or resources to the cause. Find out more about this year’s walk and where the funds raised are directed.

1. Study tip: Take a break

Suggesting you step away from your desk might sound like unusual study advice, but plotting in regular breaks to relax can help to reduce stress and renew your focus - especially when combined with a breath of fresh air.

Rediscover York with a range of guided walking tours taking place in and around the city as part of this year’s York Festival of Ideas, or explore the range of self-guided podcast walks, exhibitions and art trails at a time that works best for you.

2. Take part in York Pride

Pride Month is an opportunity to celebrate, but also a chance to reflect on the challenges facing the LGBTQ+ community, and to demonstrate our commitment to support, hope and solidarity for the future.

Our involvement in Pride events is a staff and student-led tradition, which we're proud to continue with our sponsorship this year, inviting all members of our community to join us on Saturday 30 May for the York Pride Parade and on Wednesday 3 June to raise the Progress Pride Flag. Find out more about Pride celebrations.

3. Stay connected throughout the summer

Wherever you are this summer vacation - at home, travelling, working or continuing your studies, TalkCampus is here for you.

TalkCampus gives you access to a safe, anonymous space so you can share how you are feeling and find support whenever you need it, 24/7.
