9 Sept 2024 - Welcome to all!
We’re looking forward to welcoming you - or welcoming you back - to York! During the semester, we send you a short student news summary of key things happening each week across the University.
Continuing students should already have their Semester 1 timetable, while new students will get their timetable on Wednesday (11 September). You can import your timetable into Google Calendar or bring everything together by downloading the MyUoY app.
The Student Hub is a first port of call for support and advice for students - our Student Information Team can help with any questions you might have or point you in the right direction for further support. The Student Hub is moving from Market Square to a new location in Sally Baldwin Block D on Thursday (12 September). Our campus map in the MyUoY app will help you find your way.
We have moved to a hub-based model for our receptions on Campus West, similar to the ones on Campus East. Receptions at Wentworth, Alcuin, Derwent, and James are now closed and, instead, there is a larger reception hub at the Information Centre, with a satellite reception continuing in the normal location at Halifax College.

There are welcome events for all over the next few weeks. As well as your college-specific events, the University of York Students' Union is hosting a huge calendar for all students, new and returning. Come along to Comedy Night for a night full of fun with top comedians. Or get your house or flatmates together for Live at York for a glamourous night of music and drag!
After a busy few days of fun, make sure to set some time aside for the Self-Care Fair on 25 September. With sessions like 'Brew and Book', yoga, and spending time with therapy dogs, it's the best medicine to treat any Welcome overwhelm!
Head to the York SU website for the full timetable of welcome events.

3. It won’t happen to you.. right?
You never think it will happen to you but we often hear of scammers targeting students at this time of year. Protect yourself by taking a few moments to find out about current scams we know of - like the Student Loans Company phishing scam and the fake HMRC tax refunds scam. International students should also be aware of the fake visa or police scam. Learn our seven tell-tale signs of a scam.
We also see a lot of email scams. To protect yourself and your personal information, you need to be able to spot phishing messages. Your username and password are vital pieces of your University identity - never share your password. If someone does know it, you need to change your password.

4. Develop your language skills
Learning a language can be a life-changing experience, boost your career prospects, allow you to develop key transferable skills, and open a window into different ways of thinking, communicating, and experiencing the world. You may be able to study either as part of your degree or as an extracurricular activity this year. Find out more about language learning opportunities at York.

There have been some changes to buses in order to improve travel for our community. Existing routes have been renamed and there are new services to the Barbican and the Designer Outlet. Remember you can travel between Campus East and Campus West for free. Simply tap on and off as normal - there will be no charge as long as you tap off within the Campus Zone area. Find out more about public transport at the University and download the First Bus app to live track your bus.
