UoY community update

Direct debit mandate deadline

Don't want to miss payment deadlines? The easiest way to pay tuition fees and for university accommodation is by direct debit. You need to submit your completed direct debit mandate form by Monday 6 October in order for it to be processed before your first payment due on 31 October.

Reminder: Understanding consent training

All students must complete the new Respect at York training on ‘Understanding consent and being an active bystander’ on the VLE. This module supports everyone to better understand what sexual consent is and how to have healthy, consensual relationships. Find out more about how we are tackling harassment and sexual misconduct.

Student Loans Company fraud advice

The Student Loans Company (SLC) is warning new and returning students to be vigilant of scams. Remember - the SLC will never ask students to provide their personal or financial information via email or text message. Wednesday is the first day of Cybersecurity Awareness Month. It’s never been more important to learn how to keep your personal information secure.

Just flu - or something more?

Some symptoms of meningitis can be confused with flu-like symptoms. Although cases are very few, meningitis is potentially a very dangerous infection and can get worse very quickly. Make sure you know when you need to act with infectious illnesses.

Water supply works on University Road - plan your travel

From tomorrow until Thursday (30 September to 2 October), Yorkshire Water are carrying out works that may cause disruption around University Road at the top of Vanbrugh Way.

1. IMPORTANT: Exceptional circumstances affecting assessment update

Sometimes, things happen that affect your performance in an assessment or prevent you from taking it entirely. If your issues are unforeseen, you may be able to apply for exceptional circumstances affecting assessment.

The way you apply for these assessment adjustments is changing. From Monday 6 October, you will see a new button in e:Vision where you can apply for exceptional circumstances affecting assessment including self-certification. If you have a Student Support Plan, you will also see a new button in e:Vision where you can ask for an individual adjustment, such as an extension or deferral, to be applied to an assessment. If you access the old platform from 6 October, you will be redirected to e:Vision.

The new e:Vision task brings together some of the tasks that were previously separate and presents information to you that we already hold, rather than asking for it again. If you have any feedback on the new task, please complete this exceptional circumstances feedback form.

2. Get involved in student life

Your time at university is a chance to do more of what you already love - and discover new passions. Learn more of the basics about student life in York and explore opportunities to get involved and expand your experiences, both here on campus and in the city of York.

Could you help represent student voices and create change? Academic reps shape the experience of students across the University - all while gaining valuable skills for their CV. See if your department is recruiting academic reps or find contact details if you have feedback for your rep.

3. Managing your money: help and advice

We know money can be tight as a student. From free laptop loans to how to make a cheap cuppa on campus, see information about how we can help - as well as the support that’s available if you do find yourself struggling with unexpected costs. Would more tailored advice help? Our friendly student money adviser, Lucy, is holding money advice drop-in sessions this semester. Whether you have a quick question about your finances, a worry about rent, or just want to find out how to enjoy uni life on a budget, she’s here to help. No appointment necessary - just pop in to the Student Hub 11am-12pm on Tuesdays.

4. Prepare for careers fairs

A new month brings new opportunities! Whether you’re keen to meet a specific employer or just curious about where in the world your degree could take you, join the careers team for their two dedicated careers fairs here for you on campus in October:

  • 8 Oct: Law Fair
Did you know that around 50% of new recruits in many law firms come from a non-law background?
