UoY community update

Dark nights on campus

As the nights draw in, please be aware of your safety and security on campus. You can get 24/7 access to the Campus Safety team on campus through the SafeZone app. Download Safezone today.

Tackling hate crime

Racially-motivated incidents have been reported by our staff and students in recent weeks, and we are clear that hate has no place in our community. We are working with North Yorkshire Police to share intelligence and to prioritise tackling hotspot areas in the City and on campus, which includes extra patrols to increase visibility and support community safety.

Just flu - or something more? Know the difference between symptoms

As winter approaches, we’re seeing an increased number of cases of flu, covid and other respiratory viruses appear across our community. To help keep one another safe, and limit the spread of any sickness, be sure to follow the latest advice to help reduce the spread of infections.

Some symptoms of meningitis can be easily confused with flu-like symptoms. Meningitis is potentially a very dangerous infection and can get worse very quickly. Make sure you know when you need to act with infectious illnesses.

Tuition fee instalment - 31 October 2025

A quick reminder that if you pay your own tuition fees or accommodation costs, a payment instalment is due at the end of this month. The easiest way to pay is via the ‘My Finance’ section in e:vision. If you have set up a direct debit, this will be automatically taken around the due date.

Campus wifi upgrade - 30 October 2025

Updates to our campus wifi service will be taking place on Thursday 30 October between 7pm and midnight. Wifi will still be available during this time, however, there may be brief interruptions in some areas. Stay up to date with the latest information via our IT Service Status page.

1. Explore your skills development

Take time during Consolidation Week to find your way around our new Skills Hub. Our study skills support includes Skills Guides, with videos, slides, and exercises on a range of academic skills topics to help you catch up or develop your skills further. There’s also our Subject Guides where you’ll find resources specific to your subject, as well as our online academic skills workshops and one-to-one appointments.

2. Reflect on your strengths and your future plans

Consolidation Week can be a time to think about what is important to you and what makes you thrive. By working your way through videos, podcasts and activities, our Success at York Toolkit can help you reflect on what your time at university might all be for and help you plan your future. Or support your professional development and reflect on what career might suit you with our York Strengths programme.

3. Paid role: Be a key voice in developing University initiatives

Be a key student voice in developing University initiatives and strategies by applying to join the Student Expert Panel. The Student Expert Panel ensures that diverse student experiences, needs and perspectives are represented in everything that the University does - get involved with giving feedback or developing your own project! Application deadline: Monday 10 November 2025

4. Come to the Global Opportunities Fair

Register for our Global Opportunities Fair on Wednesday 5 November to find out how to apply for opportunities to study, work and volunteer abroad. Speak to Global Opportunities staff and meet York students who have been abroad. Discover more about independent travel opportunities from representatives of international volunteering organisations.

5. Make the most of spooky season in York

Unofficially known as the ‘most haunted city in Europe’, York is steeped in spooktacular ways to take a well deserved break from your studies, right on your doorstep. From local pumpkin picking to ghostly tours, crafternoons on campus all the way to small business stalls at the Yorkshire Halloween Festival, there are plenty of tricks and treats to explore across the city. You may even spot a familiar feathered friend amidst the Ghosts in the Gardens…
