1. How are you? Let us know

SWANS student wellbeing survey

Friday (10 October) is World Mental Health Day. You can play a part in important research taking place right here at York by completing our SWANS survey into student wellbeing. By letting us know in the survey how you have been feeling over the past couple of weeks, you’ll contribute to much-needed research into student wellbeing generally and help us make positive developments in our student support services. Check your UoY inbox this week for your invitation to take part in the SWANS survey. If you find yourself struggling, remember we have help and support available at York - please reach out.

Want to get more involved? Join The Good Mental Health Project on Wednesday 15 October for an interactive workshop focused on shaping the future of wellbeing across the city of York. We’ll explore what wellbeing truly is, identify the barriers students face, celebrate what’s working, and envision the changes we’d like to see to support wellbeing in our city, from campus initiatives to community-wide support. All this, and pizza too!

2. Want to get organised?

Let the Academic Skills Community help take some of the stress out of organising your studies with these upcoming online workshops:

  • 13 Oct: Time management: Tips and tools for organising yourself to enable you to make the best use of your time.

  • 15 Oct: Assignment planning: How to understand the assignment requirements, break down tasks, set deadlines, and allocate time effectively to ensure thorough research, writing, and revision.

  • 16 Oct: Strategies to increase reading speed:  How reading strategies - such as skimming, scanning, text navigation, and deducing meaning from context - can be applied to the reading of academic texts.

See tips for time management in our Being organised: a Practical Guide and find out about tools to help you, including how to make a semester planner.

3. Finding part-time work

Alongside Handshake, discover part-time work that fits around your studies with York SU’s Joblink — the student employment service connecting you to student-friendly employers across York and Leeds. We recommend that you don’t work more than 20 hours per week during the semester and, if you're an international student, make sure any work complies with the conditions on your visa. See our advice on working while you study and the support we can provide to help you with managing your money.
