Money advice open hour

Our Student Hub team is here to help with advice and support in managing your money. Drop in to our confidential money open hour every Tuesday - or this Wednesday (19 November) we have a dedicated Access it All money session for disabled and neurodivergent undergraduates. Whether you have a specific question in mind or just don’t know where to begin, please let us help.

Plan your travel: Christmas market footfall

The return of the annual York Christmas Market (13 November - 21 December 2025) is expected to cause increased traffic and potential delays throughout the city. Please allow extra time for your journeys and anticipate possible bus delays.

Stay safe on campus routes

Please use designated footpaths when walking between Campus East and West, and avoid cutting through the Heslington Church car park. There have been recent near misses involving pedestrians and vehicles in this area. To keep everyone safe, stick to the footpaths and stay alert - especially as evenings get darker. Small actions like keeping headphones low, watching for cars, and being visible can make a big difference.

1. Marking Disability History Month

Disability History Month 2025 returns from Thursday 20 November until Saturday 20 December with a range of events, activities, reading lists and more across campus and the city. Looking for a way to unwind after your studies? Join York SU for their next Disabled Students Games Night (Monday 24 November) - an accessible and welcoming evening of board games and puzzles with refreshments provided.

If you have a disability, contact Disability Services to chat through your needs and they will recommend support options best suited to you. For general questions about disability support available, you can also visit one of their weekly drop-ins in the Sally Baldwin Building.

2. Get involved with Movember fundraising

Movember - an annual charity event raising funding and awareness for men’s mental and physical health - is in full swing. Supported by Vice-Chancellor Charlie Jeffery and the York SU Sabbs taking on the 60km challenge, Team York has raised over £18,000 so far! Please consider donating and, with more Movember events still to come, follow @uoy_movember on Instagram to keep up to date.

As well as student fundraising, York is playing a critical role in shaping national policy, with Professor Paul Galdas (Health Sciences) leading a regional drive to improve men’s mental health. Find out more about Paul’s work and impact.

3. Developing your speaking and listening skills

Worried about speaking in front of a group? Or is English not your first language and you want to practise speaking in a supportive environment? Our Confidence to Speak and Listen (COSAL) workshop series takes place each Wednesday and is ideal to help you develop confidence and practise communicating.

4. Making life easier when writing your dissertation

When producing a long piece of academic writing, such as a dissertation or thesis, you need to produce material as efficiently as possible and match academic guidelines. Our online session Microsoft Word for dissertations and theses on Tuesday (18 November) shows you how to save time and effort by using tools such as styles, automatic page numbers, tables of contents, and captions. See also our practical guide to word processing software.

5. Black Friday scams: stay safe shopping during holiday season

With the return of Black Friday and Cyber Monday on the horizon, be careful when exploring online shopping deals: scammers try to use the surge in online purchases to push fake deals and try to steal your personal data.

Whether you’re hoping to grab a bargain for yourself or a loved one, remember: if a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is. Check out our top tips for safe shopping online.
